Re:Axis comes from Portugal and this release is his latest on a local label. However, Power sounds like he was heavily inspired by Dan Bell and Robert Hood’s early minimalism, with some of Jeff Mills’ propulsive rhythms thrown into the mix. “The Purpose” centres on a lithe, muscular rhythm, pitch-bent percussion and the deft, understated use of filters and claps. It’s streamlined, linear and flawlessly executed. Meanwhile, “Meaning” sees Re:Axis drop an insistent organ riff, rolling snares and a relentless groove. It’s more up-tempo and intense than “The Purpose”, but the common bond on both tracks is the Portuguese producer’s understated but effective production style.
