Shift LTD is only Prequel Tapes’ second release – following the 2015 Inner Systems album for Ninja Tune sub-label R’COUP’D – and sees him nail his colours firmly to the grimy techno mast. “The Stream” is a full on, stomping techno affair, led by pounding kicks, eerie chords and punchy bursts of filtered white noise. It all adds up to a dramatic peak-time affair. On “My Favourite Thing”, Prequel Tapes slows down the tempo but in the process doesn’t sacrifice the intensity levels, as a muddy bass and sharp percussion make for a slamming track. “Slow Move” closes out the release with dense waves of distorted bass underpinning noisy stabs.
