Formerly one half of Wighnomy Brothers with Robag Wruhme, Soren Bodner aka Monkey Maffia returns on Freude Am Tanzen with his first release in four years. You can bet that it’s worth the wait and he certainly does serve up some riveting moments of dancefloor drama across the EP’s four tracks. Beginning with the brooding and suspense filled narrative of “Bad Or Good”, until the highly engineered tech house of “Fake Heroes” delivers something more slinky and hypnotic – which will work great on a loud sound system. Elsewhere, the stripped back and dubby minimalism of “MiniMi” demonstrates Bodner’s clever diversity within his sound repertoire. He saves the best for last on the emotive deep house charmer “Schoerless” featuring a Mr Fingers style Juno bassline and some cleverly sampled house vocals for added effect: we really enjoyed this one. Monkey Maffia proves again that it’s all about quality, not quantity and it certainly has been worth the wait!
